Prenatal Massage
Prenatal Massage is a gentle therapeutic form of massage designed to bring comfort, vitality, and energy to pregnant women. During this time, the baby is deriving all of its nutrition from the mother, pressing on vital nerves and organs and adding a few extra pounds. All of these things can cause added stress to the mother. What better way to revitalize the blood, relax overworked muscles and joints, and rejuvenate the mind and body than to have a caring, mindful massage.
Pre-natal Massage is given starting in the fourth month. Prior to that, massage is not recommended as this is the time the fetus is inserting itself into the lining of the uterus. Pregnancy massage typically uses Swedish massage type techniques in a gentle relaxing form. Some therapists add energy work (like Reiki and Polarity) and simple guided imagery to their routine. During the session, the client is draped and covered at all times. The only part that need be exposed is the part being massaged. Based on an individual’s condition, the massage begins by lying face up on the table propped by pillows. A small towel is placed under the right hip to prevent the baby from restricting the blood flow thru the Vena Cave (major blood vessel responsible for return blood flow to the heart and lungs). The therapist usually starts at the head then moves to the neck and shoulders, arms, abdomen (optional), legs, and feet. Next, the client rolls on to one side then the other (supported by lots of pillows) and the therapist works on the back, neck and shoulders, and legs.
The client should notify the therapist at any time during the massage if she begins to feel pain, dizziness, or nausea. It is not unusual for the client to have to use the bathroom during the session. A clean robe and slippers are kept on hand just in case.
